Attending Kokedama Workshop
What is Kokedama?
Kokedama is a popular ancient Japanese gardening display of houseplants. With a little creativity and passion, you can transform your house into a green sanctuary with Kokedamas.
In this all-inclusive workshop, you get to experience first hand the proper way of creating a kokedama from scratch. From creating the soil mixture and moss to choosing a range of colours for the yarn, unleash your creativity with your own kokedama.
First step:
You get to choose the type of plants for you to work on. They have 3 type of plants available for the session – China Doll, Bird Nest Fern, and Calathea. We asked which of these 3 plants are the easiest to maintain, it would be Bird Nest Fern or Calathea. For China Doll, they tend to dry out easier so it would be of the most maintenance among the 3 plant breeds.
Second Step:
We are taught to loosen the soil around the roots after we depotted the plant. We may not get to use the whole plant from the pot as it will end up with a very big kokedama, so we usually need to split up the plant into half. The key into loosening the roots is to rub it around. The teachers was detailed in showing us on how to
Third Step:
We were taught on how to add the moss together with the ball of soil for our plant. The moss works great to retain the moisture in the soil.
Fourth Step:
Securing the moss ball with a fishing line.
Fifth Step:
Adding our selected yarn to go around the ball. Somehow, I have successfully mummifed my Kokedama plant.
The final look!
At the final part of the workshop, the teacher guided us on how to take care of the Kokedama plants, which are super easy. The plants only need to be soaked for 5 minutes (depending on how big the ball is) every time for watering. This watering step only needs to be repeated when the moss surrounding the plant is super dry, which is probably only once every 2-3 weeks.
Tip: Try on to place it next to other plants to prevent bugs from infesting on the kokedama plant!
We went home as a proud parent of our plants. This Kokedama experiential session is held daily at SPACE 4 US at just $50 per head. This works great when you have friends in town and decided to just pop by for some workshops.
Thanks to Space 4 Us for having us again!
