On November 28, 2012 by Michelle

Hi everyone!

Beauty lovers in Singapore no longer have to jet to Tokyo for their kawaii makeup fix with the launch of JCosmeLand in Watsons stores. Designed to be a re-creation of the bustling shopping experience unique to the self-select drugstore cosmetic scene in Japan, JCosmeLand enhances this experience by featuring the latest and best-selling products from Japan, adapted for everyday use.

With JCosmeland, Watsons strives to go beyond the unique shopping experience that customers can enjoy. Kawaii Corner is a space that provides access to novel, high quality, and trendy drugstore cosmetics, while Shibuya Gals is a newer space created in late 2011 to cater to the rising interest in Gyaru makeup.

JCosmeland will also be a community where Japanese makeup aficionados can gather to share and learn about the latest trends in Japanese makeup, seen through quarterly events held at the main retail area Kawaii Corner, as well as the retail and online community Shibuya Gals. Lovers of Gyaru makeup will also get the chance to learn from three popular makeup bloggers who will regularly share their rich knowledge of Japanese makeup tips through these platforms.

Rise of “Gyaru” Makeup Trend
“Gyaru” is the Japanese literation of the word “gal” and this trend rose to popularity in the 1970’s, drawing from the rich history of African American hip-hop culture. This has produced sub-groups like the black faced “ganguros” or “kogals”. Gyaru is famously known to symbolise a rebellious youth, part exaggerated fashion and makeup, and part devil-may-care attitude.

The Gyarus of today however, have risen above their rebellious beginnings. Aspiring Gyarus of today strive for a doll-like makeup style that enhances the eyes and softens one’s looks. This trend was brought to international prominence by the Goddess of Gyaru, Tsubasa Masuwaka, who is the beauty and brains behind Dolly Wink.

Shibuya Gals – Sassy and Bold
Current make up trends that can be found in Shibuya Gals exudes an easy girlish glamour, characterised by lash framed eyes, pale skin and lips, and rosy cheeks. The Gyaru look is versatile; easily adapting lush eye makeup into everyday makeup that gives the wearer a distinctive Japanese edge.
