Foundation / Base Review Series: Burberry Sheer Luminous Liquid Foundation

On March 3, 2011 by Michelle Ng

Hello everyone!

I finally managed to post this up! This was intented to be finished before January when the news of Burberry reaching Singapore by January was released. However, since there was no sign of Buberry counters here, it gave me enough time to fully test out the Burberry Sheer Luminous Liquid Foundation before I churn out a review.

Burberry Sheer Luminous Compact Foundation was purchased back in my HK trip during October for HKD380.

Burberry Sheer Luminous Compact Foundation Details:
taken from nordstrom.com

Price: USD$52

Formula: A sheer and light cream fluid. A gelled structure for optimum light diffusion.

Benefits: A subtle finish and natural glow that illuminate the skin. The skin feels beautifully bare, supple and comfortable.

Protection: Hydrating formula. Contains UV filters to protect from damaging environmental exposure.

How to use: Gently shake the bottle. For simple application, rub the foundation in your fingertips and gently sweep across your face, as you would a moisturizer, to give a really even tone. Apply with a brush for medium cover or with a sponge for a maximum coverage.

Packaging:Metal lid with the trademark Burberry checks imprinted contributed to most of the weight of the foundation. Without the lid, the plastic bottle is light. The squeeze pump is easy to control and it has a turn-lock system which prevents any unecessary spillage. Unlike some foundation, this whole bottle is actually quite bulky due to its size which may not be very convenient to carry around. Nevertheless, the packaging is just stunning.

Value: For US$52 / SGD77 (check HERE for the whole list of Burberry products coming to SG) , the price is comparable to other luxury lines such as Chanel, Dior etc. Depending on where Burberry counter would be opened, some departmental stores have occasional rebates sale. After rebtates, I believe this foundation is quite worth it for almost 6 months of usage. This foundation can last quite long due to the fact that a small amount is only needed, which will be explained below.

Colour range: The range of the colour provided is not bad as it is suitable for almost everybody in the market. The shade that I have is Trench No. 4 hich seems to be the most popular shade in Hong Kong as it contains a visible amount of yellow. For the picture from cafemakeup.com, you can tell that Trench No. 2 has the most pink undertones. Trench No. 3 is surprisingly darker than 4, most probably due to the fact that it has a peach undertone. Trench No. 1 would fit those who are around the shade of NC15 or below. For reference, I am NC20 and Trench No. 4 looks slightly fairer on me when applied. However, this will oxidise a fair bit, thus, able to match my NC20 skin after a few hours’ of wear.

Texture: This has a gel like cream texture unlike most liquid foundations you see. However, it does not feel heavy on the skin and surprisingly feel light weight. Because of its cream like texture, when I use a foundation brush, I tend to use more product than necessary and feel like wearing a mask. This foundation would work best with buffer brushes like MAC109 or Sigma flat top buffer brush. Using the right tool, the foundation would feel like your second skin.

Scent: Same as the powder foundation, I dislike its rose scent. This scent still lingers even after a few hours’ of wear. Lucikly, I did not experience any breakouts despite the foundation containing fragrance.

Coverage: This liquid foundation is able to provide a light to medium coverage which is quite buildable. However do not expect it to give you full coverage.

Finish: I would say a satin matte finish. Despite the word “luminous” in its name, I don’t feel that this is a dewy foundation. This finish is comparable to Chanel Mat Lumiere foundation.

After blended out:

Lasting power: Because of its texture, this is able last quite long on me. Much better than Chanel Mat Lumiere or Nars sheer glow. As my face constantly produces sebum, this foundation might not last as long as others who have better skin than mine. If I were to use an oil controlling primer, such as MUFE all mat primer, this foundation can last for more than 8 hours. I do not notice any seperation of the foundation unlike the 2 foundations I mentioned above.

Product overall: The formula is very lightweight and blending is pretty effortless. Its oil control properties is not that great but should not be a problem as long as an oil controlling primer is used. Its lasting power is commendable especially for a humid weather like Singapore. Only a little setting powder is needed or else the foundation may look matte on you.

Will I repurchase it again? Yes.
